This years Garden! '09

This was last years photo to show the mint and how prolific it was!

Today was the day to really get a start on the garden! I went out at 10:00am and came in at 5:45pm, with only a 1/2 hour break for lunch, plenty got done! I made the mistake many years ago to plant one little pot of mint! Well, it took over the perimeter of the garden, each year having to pull the runners that find their way into the beds. This year was no different, but I dug up most of it and filled a full size garden cart with roots and runners! Argggghhhh! It was backbreaking to say the least. I also prepared most of the long bed with composted manure and the first bed is not only prepared but planted with 2 types of snap peas, rhubarb chard and fordhook chard as well as lettuces and mesclun mixes! A job well done I must say! Also new fencing was put on one side of the garden since the chickens learned to step over the other. Looking good, though my muscles are rebelling at this point! Tomorrow it is supposed to rain, so the tomatoes will be started inside as well as eggplant and peppers. I have encouraged many of my friends to start a garden, even a container garden. It is rewarding and you not only save money, you know what your eating. Have at it!
